Why Bigger Is Better
My grates are nearly 3 pounds heavier than OEM grates. Mine have 5 beefed up bars that are 1-1/8" wide and 4 slots 7/8" compared to OEM which are 1"bar & 1"slot. Bars are also 1" thick their full length instead of 1" in the middle and tapered down to the ends. The smaller slots don't allow as much big pieces of coal to fall through and act like torches when the fan is on, burning up grates and shortening their life.
The best way to help your grates last is to leave a small amount of ash on top of them and don't let ashes on bottom of furnace build nearly to bottom of grates, this allows coals that fall through to finish burning out closer to grate instead of 6-8" away.
